InspeCO2 is IMPRESS’s solution to monitor your carbon footprint. InspeCO2 is the control system for IMPRESS Lidar, a research project at UCSB for the NASA ASCENDS program. IMPRESS Lidar’s goal is to create a Lidar system to detect and map CO2 in the atmosphere. InspeCO2 incorporates the hardware and software from IMPRESS Lidar into a control system and user friendly interface.
ForestField’s goal is to address the problem with current inefficient fire detection methods by using a wirelessly integrated network of fire detection modules to collectively monitor large forest areas with a centralized computer. ForestField will reduce the time before a fire is detected, decrease the need for patrols, and can actively monitor a fire as it spreads.
In our everyday life, we are surrounded by numerous motors. From the refrigerator to the fan over the stove to even the garbage disposal in the sink, electric motors are everywhere. For years, the way by which motors are run hasn’t changed at all despite new technology being developed that could make them more efficient.
Unmanned autonomous drones have proven successful in environmental research, military applications, and search-and-rescue operations. The Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) aims to extend these capabilities to operate in maritime conditions by providing a modular platform for autonomous navigation. The proposed maritime navigation solution allows for data collection in environments that are either too hazardous or impractical for manned vessels.
AeroVironment provides designs and information solutions by developing unmanned aircraft systems. They are concerned about sensor failure during drone flight and want to find a solution using redundant sensors. Our team is developing a custom PCB to demonstrate multiple sensory redundancy support. This PCB will feature multiple sensors of the same type to prove that increased redundancy is possible and will be programmed using custom-built firmware and an Ardupilot instance.
Currently, astronauts onboard the International Space Station (ISS) follow intricate step-by-step instructions and often encounter challenges due to complex procedures, inadequate details, and reliance on training from months prior. While astronauts can call ground personnel for assistance, ground access will become limited in future expeditions due to distance and bandwidth limitations.
Despite the fact that only about 25% of motor vehicle travel takes place at night, nearly 75% of fatal car accidents occur around this time of the day. One of the main reasons for this ongoing issue is that current Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems use visible-light cameras, which struggle to detect pedestrians in low-light conditions. SafeSight is an innovative device that uses thermal camera technology to detect pedestrians and obstructions using their heat signatures.
Our project is to provide a user friendly, fully offline, and relatively affordable solution to control Praevium’s development kits with a touchscreen GUI. Praevium Research specializes in VCSEL lasers and provides dev kits to other researchers for a variety of different applications. Currently these kits come with the laser controlled by a Red Pitaya and some additional components on a custom PCB. The Red Pitaya hosts a web GUI which a researcher can use to set the laser parameters.
Our project aims to create a captivating LEGO art piece depicting the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) map in the downtown Boston area, with added features to provide real-time information of the subway system. Through several LEDs spread throughout the map, this project visually represents the precise locations of trains within the MBTA network based on their most recent stop, offering commuters and enthusiasts an interactive and informative experience.
