In recent years, wild brush fires are growing in cases and size, causing unprecedented death counts, mass evacuations, billions of dollars in damage, and spiked CO2 emissions. One common method of wild brush fire containment is by constructing firelines manually with a 20-person hot shot crew. However, with a construction rate of 0.06 miles per hour, this method is inefficient and dangerous.

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a movement disorder caused by a static injury in the brain of a young infant. 3 in 1000 children are born with cerebral palsy, and 41% of these children as they grow older will face limited abilities in the future when trying to run, to walk, or even to crawl. Despite the potential effectiveness of therapy to treat cerebral palsy symptoms, many young infants are currently not receiving the full benefits of this treatment because they are simply not participating in enough therapy mainly due to a combination of a parent’s busy schedule and a lack of financial means.

Each year, the Society of Automotive Engineers hosts a competition called Formula SAE Electric, in
which top universities are challenged to design, build, and race single-seater electric race cars
from scratch. Our project is to represent UC Santa Barbara by building a car for the 2024 FSAE
Electric Michigan competition, which can pass technical inspection and compete in the dynamic
racing events. To accomplish this, our vehicle features a tube frame chassis, double wishbone
suspension with pushrod actuation, custom 537 volt battery pack, cloud-connected data

Clear Skies

Our goal is to keep balloons out of the ocean as they are a top source of marine debris and threaten the lives of ocean animals and sea birds. We have created two solutions for party balloon pollution. 1) The Latex Lad, a fully thought-out, optimized, field-tested, and mass manufacturable product ready to hit the shelves with future funding and minor development in the adhesive realm. 2) The Mylar Mate, a mid- stage prototype that functions as a proof of concept to prevent accidental mylar release. When released, these balloons will float but not fly away.

VitaLung

VitaLung’s goal is to provide a lightweight, adjustable, and affordable treatment vest for
cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Over 100,000 people in the developing world suffer from CF with a
life expectancy of 20 years. Vest treatment can significantly improve the overall health of CF
patients; however, current treatment is expensive, heavy, and uncomfortable to wear. Our
project aims to address all of these issues. We are designing a lightweight, adjustable wrap
attached to an air unit that encloses the air blower and solenoid valves. The technology

OMNI Trainer

The goal of our project is to modify a functional trainer pulley machine to be more accessible to
people with disabilities, with an emphasis on wheelchair and dexterity related disabilities.
People in wheelchairs have a limited reach and are often unable to reach the pulley at certain
heights, and people with dexterity related disabilities are not able to remove the spring loaded
locking pin and adjust the height at the same time. To ease these problems, our machine has a
cable that wraps around a winch and is attached on the ends to the pulley adjustment assembly.

StarRider

Cause and effect play is essential for the development of young minds. However,
for children with mobility impairments, like cerebral palsy, this type of play might be
harder to achieve. The goal of StarRider is to provide these children with an alternative
way to move and participate in cause and effect play. Over the past nine months we
have been developing a cause and effect vehicle for infants and young children with

The objective of this capstone project is the development and implementation of a versatile vehicle capable of both ground and aerial transportation. There exist many prospective applications in the commercial and scientific domains that are currently occupied by single-mode products, such as aerial drones. This project is primarily focused on the research and exploration of such a robotic structure that is capable of traversing all three dimensions.

Apical Robotics

Our mission at Apical Robotics is to revolutionize industrial pipe inspection. Currently, there are no efficient methods to inspect large diameter pipe and HVAC networks. Operators are forced to disassemble large pipe sections or methodically inspect small sections of HVAC networks at a time to verify the integrity of their networks. Bechtel sponsored us to develop a vine robot inspection device to navigate their large diameter liquid natural gas pipelines.
