VitaLung’s goal is to provide a lightweight, adjustable, and affordable treatment vest for
cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Over 100,000 people in the developing world suffer from CF with a
life expectancy of 20 years. Vest treatment can significantly improve the overall health of CF
patients; however, current treatment is expensive, heavy, and uncomfortable to wear. Our
project aims to address all of these issues. We are designing a lightweight, adjustable wrap
attached to an air unit that encloses the air blower and solenoid valves. The technology
provides a compressive force at a desired frequency to break up thick, viscous mucus within the
lungs of CF patients. The frequency and power of the system can be controlled by the user via
the arrow buttons on the sides of the air unit. The user will be able to adjust the wrap to fit their
body and turn on the air unit to begin treatment. After 30 minutes, they can turn off the air unit,
take off the vest, and enjoy the rest of their day.
