Heeluxe
Flux, The Active Compression Shoe

Letting it Flow

Project Type:
Mechanical Engineering
Year:
2018

Description

The Flux is a shoe that prevents and treats Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), the formation of blood clots in the deep veins of sedentary individuals. Its use of active compression, which involves repeatedly inflating and deflating an air bladder within the shoe tongue to apply periodic compression to key areas of the foot, mimics the active expansion and contraction of muscles around the deep veins. Completely human-powered, the Flux requires its wearer to tap his or her toes to pump up the forementioned bladder, further activating muscles in the lower leg. The portability, low cost of manufacturing, and effectiveness of DVT treatment by the Flux make it an ideal solution for preventing and treating DVT.
