High Friction Bicycle Tire

Don't Slip, Ride on

Project Type:
Mechanical Engineering
Year:
2018

Description

The goal of our capstone project is to prevent incidents in bicycle racing where riders slip when turning sharply around corners. We want to increase the dynamic friction of the tire on the wheel in order to solve this problem, and prevent cycling injuries. By using Professor Hawkes’ previous research, we have embedded small Nickel-Titanium spikes into the sidewall of the tire, which grab onto the pores in asphalt and prevent slipping of the tire. The spikes will only engage when cornering, and will not affect the flat riding performance of the tire. We have designed a static test mechanism in order to determine whether or not the spiked tire provides more friction than a conventional racing tire.
