Microplastic pollution is a significant problem that can negatively affect marine ecosystems. Zooplankton, the smallest animals in the ocean, can consume microplastics and their ability to reproduce can be negatively impacted, leading to cascading effects on all marine life. The problem is further compounded by the limited research into the filtration of microplastics. The focus of our project is to develop bio-inspired filters for the efficient removal of microplastics and other pollutants from water.

According to the CDC, 41% of children born with cerebral palsy are unable to walk independently, meaning that for the rest of their lives, they will need to use a hand-held mobility device or a wheelchair to do what’s easy and essential for us. Since physical therapy is more effective the younger a child is due to their high neuroplasticity and rapid growth, it is essential to begin treatment as soon and as consistently as possible. This raises the challenge that the shortage of qualified physical therapists cannot match the high demand for treatment.

One of the most common tasks in working with space technologies is precisely aligning an assembled Printed Circuit Board (PCB) to a mechanical frame. These frames and PCB’s must interface with surrounding electronics through use of dense fragile connectors, with any misalignment of the assembly causing the connectors to shear. Getting into space creates considerable vibration, and with no air, conduction is the only method of cooling available.

Our project’s goal is to inspire gyms to make working out more accessible by modifying exercise
equipment for a paralympic athlete. While 1 in 4 Americans have a mobility disability, gym
equipment is almost always designed for able-bodied people. We are adapting one half of a
dual-pulley machine to allow our sponsor to demonstrate these issues and push for change
because the components used to alter these machines are often inaccessible.

We are working on helping orthopedic surgeons work smarter and not harder. In the United
States there are over 300,000 anterior lumbar spinal fusions performed every year.

Our project aims to prevent the buildup of plastic pollution in marine and wildlife ecosystems due to helium-filled balloons. Currently, balloons contribute to up to 3% of all plastic pollution once released by consumers and the only preventive measure is a weight attached to the string.
