Buoy Buddy

Research Responsibly

Project Type:
Mechanical Engineering
Year:
2020

Description

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) aims to research and protect the world's oceans. One such method is the deployment of mooring devices, or data acquisition devices attached to anchors. Traditionally, when the data acquisition devices are retrieved, the anchor is abandoned at the bottom of the ocean, creating waste and harming natural habitats. Our team is developing an integrated mooring retrieval system that, when retrieved, brings the entire system to the surface, leaving no waste left behind. The Buoy Buddy implements a dual release system that can be coupled with an acoustic release, ensuring data recovery while still retrieving the anchor. Successful implementation of this improved system will protect from habitat destruction and ocean waste.
