ForestField’s goal is to address the problem with current inefficient fire detection methods by using a wirelessly integrated network of fire detection modules to collectively monitor large forest areas with a centralized computer. ForestField will reduce the time before a fire is detected, decrease the need for patrols, and can actively monitor a fire as it spreads.

ForestField can be viewed in three components: the sensor node, the wireless network, and the application. The sensor node is comprised of environmental sensors (CO2 and humidity levels), a microcontroller, a battery supply, and a LoRaWAN transceiver. The sensor node collects environmental data periodically and transmits the data to the next nearest sensor node using the LoRaWAN communication protocol. This procedure continues into the data reaches an IoT LoRa gateway node which then transmits the data to a local server that our application can access. The application processes and visualizes the data and triggers an alarm if a specific threshold value for each environment data is crossed.
