Auto Align
Auto Align
The Landsat Next mission relies on the ultra-precise alignment of sensors to ensure accurate, high-resolution Earth observation data. The sensors must be angularly positioned within exceptionally tight tolerances because even microscopic misalignments can compromise a satellite's performance. These sensor assemblies also feature "no touch" components which makes traditional manual assembly and alignment highly risky and frustrating.
To address these assembly challenges, this project develops an automated, motorized actuated system engineered specifically to interface exclusively with the instrument's small "touchable" structural regions. Designed to be under an optical system, a user can interact with an interface to initiate the alignment algorithm using the position of alignment fiducials.
The primary advantage of this actuated system is the drastic reduction of human error and frustration while also saving much time, labor, and money for the operation. Additionally, by standardizing the alignment procedure and minimizing direct human contact the safety of the sensitive components are ensured.
