Apeel Sciences has a mission to utilize a chemical layer made of edible plant materials to coat the world’s fruits and vegetables to improve produce life and reduce food waste. One way the effectiveness of their chemical coating is evaluated is by manually cutting and testing individual fruit like avocados. However, this evaluation is very time consuming and poses a safety risk on employees at Apeel Sciences. Our team is improving this evaluation procedure by building an automated cutting machine that can convey avocados, cut them, and collect qualitative and quantitative data using imaging and sensors. Implementing our design would significantly increase the number of avocados evaluated per minute and minimize the need for human interaction. It will also increase  the amount of data collected, and thus, help Apeel Sciences fine tune their chemical layer to prolong the life of produce and reduce food waste all over the world.
