In recent years, wild brush fires are growing in cases and size, causing unprecedented death counts, mass evacuations, billions of dollars in damage, and spiked CO2 emissions. One common method of wild brush fire containment is by constructing firelines manually with a 20-person hot shot crew. However, with a construction rate of 0.06 miles per hour, this method is inefficient and dangerous. To construct firelines at a faster rate and to eliminate casualties, Civil Robotics aims to provide an alternative solution by designing a fully autonomous electric vehicle that can traverse rough terrain and clear a six to nine feet path from flashy fuels to contain brush fires. Our team will be tackling the first part of this solution by building a two-wheel-drive prototype vehicle to demonstrate our control of the vehicle over rough terrains and steep slopes while featuring our newly developed autonomous software.
