Running performance is shaped by the details of every step. Our team designed a testing machine that precisely measures the bending stiffness of running shoes, a critical factor that influences energy return, efficiency, and speed.

Currently, most brands still rely on three-point bending tests that only measure stiffness in one plane. When in reality, shoes bend in multiple directions during movement. With the goal of understanding how the shoe behaves under dynamic conditions, we developed a machine that emulates realistic shoe motion. Our system measures both longitudinal and lateral stiffness, providing Deckers with data no other testing methods can achieve, with the ability to control bend location, direction, and angle. The shoe is secured to a rigid frame and actuated in two directions while collecting performance data. By delivering a complete understanding of shoe behavior, this technology enables shoe designers and engineers to make more informed design decisions that enhance athletic performance. Because when shoes perform better, athletes do too.
