This project presents an adaptive pneumatic device that enables wheelchair users with cerebral palsy and related mobility impairments to independently adjust weight-selector pins on cable-based gym equipment. Traditional selector pin systems require reaching, grip strength, and precise hand positioning, creating accessibility barriers with cerebral palsy. The proposed device magnetically mounts directly to the weight stack and uses pneumatically actuated linear motion to control vertical positioning and horizontal pin insertion, reducing the need for fine motor dexterity.
The design follows an assisted-yet-independent model in which an assistant initially positions the device, allowing the user to independently change resistance levels throughout a workout. This project aims to provide a low-cost, portable, and reliable adaptive solution for inclusive fitness equipment. The prototyping demonstrates improved alignment, consistent selector pin engagement, and reduced physical effort compared to existing adaptive methods.
