Bio

Sean Wang is a mechanical engineering undergraduate student expected to graduate in June of 2017. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he will pursue a master’s degree as part of the 5 year BS/MS Mechanical Engineering program at UCSB, specializing in Dynamics, Controls, and Robotics. Sean also hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in the future.

Sean’s interest in mechanical systems started with his passion for automobiles. From an early age, he was fascinated by automotive engineering, and got his hands dirty tearing apart various automotive systems to study their designs further. A few of his many automotive projects include the rebuilding of a carburetor and the bottom end of a Chevrolet small block motor. This passion for automotive engineering eventually also sparked his interest in electro-mechanical systems. Sean noticed how the use of electronic controls could make mechanical systems more powerful and efficient. He started tinkering with the engine control unit of his car to change the amount of turbo boost, fuel injected, etc. to make the motor more powerful. Eventually, Sean started applying his knowledge of electronic controls to other non-automotive projects. Some electro-mechanical projects Sean has worked on include the building of multiple robots, a 3D printer, and an automated bike lock. During the junior year of his undergrad, Sean also became involved in the research of network robotics with UCSB Professor Francesco Bullo’s research group. With the group, Sean has written and published a journal article as well as a conference paper on a few different cloud-supported multi-agent surveillance system protocols that the group has developed. Sean hopes to continue following his passion, learning about and designing electro-mechanical systems, in the future.
