Bio

Kevin Griffin is a mechanical engineering student interested in controls and systems engineering. From a young age, Kevin has always had a wide variety of interests, including sports, music, and Boy Scouts. Controls and systems engineering is particularly alluring since it enables him to work on a large assortment of multidisciplinary projects.

Kevin has taken a diverse set of courses that enable him to tackle many different aspects of projects. He has taken elective courses that span controls theory, design, algorithm development, FEA, LabVIEW, and CAD/CAM. Kevin is able to design and manufacture hardware, and also generate supporting software.

Kevin's diverse set of skills has enabled him to function as an interdisciplinary team member on both his junior and senior design teams. For his junior project, he collaborated with other students to produce a portable, countertop dishwasher. He worked on fluid flow analysis, mechanical design, and final construction in the machine shop. As part of the NOAA Radar Capstone team, he has worked on the power and software subsystems. On the power side, he designed the electronics enclosure and co-designed the solar power system. On the software side, he developed an anti-theft system in LabVIEW.

His internships have also provided him a variety of experience. At iCRco he co-designed the enclosure for the Claris XT CT machine, as well as some supporting fixtures for cabling and sensors. This involved extensive use of SolidWorks, understanding of fiberglass molding techniques, and interaction with multiple suppliers. Collaborating with several other interns, Kevin also rewrote the work instructions and procedures for the assembly of their flagship cassette radiography product line. At Teledyne, Kevin was simultaneously interning with the quality and EH&S departments. He led meetings to update procedures in accordance with ISO 9001 standards and generated safety documentation compliant with OSHA regulations. At both companies, Kevin demonstrated strong teamwork, communication abilities, and work ethic.

Directly after graduation, Kevin plans to work in industry. In the future, he hopes to return to university and acquire an advanced degree.
