Description

Strand Products Inc. wishes to automate the cable cutting process by developing an electromechanical system which integrates with an existing Ewald flash cutter. The current setup, measuring, and cable dereeling processes are done manually which are slow and labor-intensive processes for a lab technician to perform. The automated system will “mimic” the lab technician’s hands by utilizing various sensors, pneumatic actuators, stepper motors, and microcontrollers when performing a cutting job. Our team’s design includes a user-friendly interface where individuals can specify cable length and quantity for each cutting job, along with other features, during the set up phase. This design will be safe to use with minimal supervision and be versatile when cutting various cable types (e.g. different spool size, cable material, or cable sizes). Our automated flash cutter will optimize the company’s time and output accurate cable length cuts.
