LineAlert

Taking the Power Out of Wildfires

Project Type:
Electrical Engineering
Year:
2023

Description

California catches on fire a lot. Power line failures are a major contributor to our wildfire problem, and the fires are only getting worse. LineAlert is an innovative solution designed to eliminate or reduce the impact of power line related fires. It has a suite of sensors that can provide information about the real-time conditions on the power line, reducing the need for manual inspections and better informing decisions regarding preventative blackouts. In the event of a failure, it can provide the precise location and type of fault so that power companies can perform focused, cost effective, and immediate repairs. If a wildfire is started, LineAlert can alert first responders with no middle man, enabling faster response time and easier containment before fires grow to an unmanageable size. All of this is provided by a package that can be installed without any additional infrastructure – it just clamps on to the power line.
