NOAA Universal Marine Monitoring Radar Trailer
Eyes for Our Ecosystem
Description
The NOAA Universal Marine Monitoring Radar Trailer is a durable, self-sufficient system designed to allow remote viewing of the Marine Protected Areas located throughout the Santa Barbara Channel. This system is capable of collecting Radar, AIS and GPS data from boats within the reserve, as well as wirelessly transmitting the data back to all interested enforcement parties. The trailer is completely self-powered, harnessing both wind and solar energy to run all electronic components. Ruggedly designed, the NOAA trailer is built to withstand the elements, while having a minimal effect on the island wildlife and ecosystem. Operating independently of its environment, the Universal Marine Monitoring Radar Trailer serves to provide protective eyes for our ecosystem.
In addition to this flagship system, a simplified system was designed and implemented at Coal Oil Point. This system takes advantage of the supplied power and internet connection at this site, which may be available at many mainland monitoring locations. Between this simplified system, and the Universal Marine Monitoring Radar Trailer, the tools are now in place to establish a comprehensive network of radar systems to protect the Marine Protected Areas of Santa Barbara Channel.
