Protecting Our Coast

Project Type:
Mechanical Engineering
Year:
2019

Description

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) seeks to protect marine habitats in a myriad of ways. One approach currently implemented is the use of a radar system located at Coal Oil Point (COP) that monitors boat activity in local marine protected areas (MPAs). The existing COP system is radar-only, which allows it to detect when objects enter the MPAs, but it fails to provide qualitative information such as types of boats or activities being performed. Our team is solving this by installing a dual-imaging FLIR M400XR, which features a visible and infrared camera, as well as a pan and tilt drive that will allow for target tracking according to radar data. The successful implementation of this imaging system will lead to improved habitat preservation along the California coast.
