Description

UCSB Ecologists Dr. Carla D’Antonio and Dr. Ryoko Oono struggle to take samples from the tops of trees and plants in inaccessible locations like cliffs and canyons.  To solve this problem and streamline their research, our team has developed a Sampling Drone Arm capable of both collecting and retrieving plant samples for plant physiology and tissue research, which attaches to the 3DR X8+ octocopter.  This device employs Arduino control to actuate a sophisticated grabbing mechanism that feeds samples through a circular saw blade and secures them for retrieval.  We ensured that our design, in addition to performing safely and reliably, is as light as possible by carefully optimizing the geometry of each part and by selecting appropriate light-weight and strong materials.
